"Dr. Wesley's" Academic Credentials

Academic Experience:

In the real world, I am "Dr. Wesley," and have 9 years of experience in collegiate higher education in the United States and Malaysia, including:

  • Teaching class composition, private composition, arranging, computer music, orchestration, and music theory

  • Advising Masters graduate students in full research mode (no classes, all work supervised by 2 advisors)

  • Advisor to senior undergraduate composition and arranging projects

  • Editorial board member and secretary of music journal (occasional reviewer for composition-related submissions)

  • Design new courses in undergraduate and graduate levels for composition and arranging

  • Graduate committee involved in developing program for music composition

  • Internal assessment of composition-related graduate presentations and theses

  • External assessment and consultation in music composition at other institutions

  • Creating short online learning videos/tutorials for music theory, orchestration, arranging, and composition.

I have had original compositions and arrangements performed all across the world, in addition to the occasional music composition related journal article.

Education Background:

I received a BS in Music Theory/Composition from William Jewell College in 2002, a Master of Music in Composition from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) in 2007, and a PhD in Music Composition from the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa in 2012.

Composition (and academic) Philosophy:

Having grown up in Japan and taught in Malaysia, I have special experience with students (and colleagues) from a wide variety of backgrounds, mixed with my own background. This largely influences my academic composition expertise of drawing on the musical interests of one's own background and of your surroundings to find one's own artistic voice.

Please feel free to contact me if you have further questions (more information/scores/transcripts/etc.)!
